NIN Registration Process (A Complete Guide)

 

A lot of questions have been going through the minds of many Nigerians ever since the directive from the Federal Government to either register for your NIN or get yourself disconnected from using your SIM cards.

Understanding The Process Of NIN Registration

NIN is an acronym for your National Identification Number. 

This number is issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) which operates and regulates matters of national identity in Nigeria with services covering National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment and issuance, National e-ID card issuance, identity verification as well as data harmonization and authentication. 

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of numbers assigned to every citizen upon successful enrolment.

The enrollment process involves receiving and storing the individual’s demographic and biometric data (involving the capture of the ten fingers). 

A person’s data is then stored with a unique NIN that was assigned to it. The NIN once issued to a person, cannot be issued to another person even if the previous person is dead. 

It is the NIN that helps to tie all records about a person in the database and is used to check the identity verified. 

In simple terms, your NIN is your means of identification as a verified citizen of this country.

Eligibility And Requirements For NIN Registration

All citizens and legal residents in Nigeria, from age zero (birth) and above are eligible to enroll for their NINs.

Now, for every citizen above 16, your BVN is a requirement if you have a bank account, to enroll for your NIN.

Note that some supporting documents may be required and so it is important to have them available. 

These documents include; Old National ID Card, Driver’s License, Voter’s card (Temporary or Permanent), Nigerian International passport, Certificate of Origin, Birth certificate or Declaration of age, NHIS ID card, Government staff ID card, Registered/recognized private organization staff ID card, School ID Card (private/public), Tax Clearance certificate, and Valid immigration documents.

Once you have these supporting documents along with the recommended BVN number, you can walk into any NIMC accredited center and register for your NIN.

The process from here is quite simple. You’ll be verified to confirm if you have previously been enrolled for the NIN number. 

If you have not been enrolled, your BVN as a requirement is verified and you’re given an enrollment form to fill. 

Your details are then inputted into the NIMC software by an official after it has been cross-checked.

If you are satisfied with your demographic information, the biometrics (ten finger prints and facial image) will be captured subsequently.

After completing the enrolment, a Transaction ID Slip will be issued to you as an evidence of the transaction. 

You can get your NIN in the next 2weeks. You’ll have to visit your enrollment centre to get the second slip which bears your NIN.
