“Why Do People Speak More Of English When You Call Them On Phone?” Join The Discussion

Have you noticed that over 90 percent of the people you talk with on phone try to talk with you using only English?

I mean even your regular guys whom you chat and gist with in your local dialect offline, the moment you call them on phone, they go all “British” or “American” on you. Especially the ladies.

I’m not even talking about when you call people of different ethnic group or language. Like a Yoruba calling an Igbo person on phone. That’s different. I’m talking of Yoruba to Yoruba, Igbo to Igbo and so on.

The same can be said for our text messages, Whatsapp and Facebook chats.

Are our languages that bad? Or is it because our phones are “Oyibo” inclined?

Lol.

I personally think this is a Nigerian problem cos I see my Kenyan friends posting and commenting on Facebook regularly using Swahili. Same can be said of South Africans. Though I don’t know if it’s the same for their phone calls.
