His parents were Juanita Thompson, a hairstylist, and Charles Sweat, a factory worker. Keith Sweat was born in Harlem. After Charles Sweat died in 1973, Juanita raised their five children on her own.

At Macy’s, he was a nighttime stock boy, and later at Paine Webber, a brokerage, he was a mail room clerk. A few tracks were recorded with independent label Stadium Records in 1984 after he left the band to explore his solo career. His debut album, “Make It Last Forever,” was produced that November by Entertainment Records after Keith signed with the label in 1987.

The album was certified three times platinum, and the single “I Want Her” topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and the “Billboard” 200 charts.
