Merald Woodrow Knight Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth (née Woods) raised Knight in Atlanta. Brenda, Merald “Bubba” Jr., and David are her brothers. She sang in the church choir in the 1940s and 1950s. She won Ted Mack’s The Original Amateur Hour at age 8 in 1952.
After a record player stopped functioning during Bubba’s 10th birthday celebration, Gladys, Bubba, Brenda, and her cousins Eleanor and William Guest started performing together. Elizabeth Knight persuaded the five to establish a group. The Pips got their moniker from cousin James “Pip” Woods. By 1955, the ensemble was winning talent shows in Atlanta. Due to their breakthrough, Brunswick Records signed them in 1957.
